HANGER CLINIC
Spotlight on Wendy Remington, prosthetist and orthotist at Hanger Clinic in Salt Lake City, UT
LIMB BY LIMB
This series delves into the intricate, behind-the-scenes process of crafting prosthetic legs. This craft blends precision, science, and artistry. By photographing Wendy in her lab, I sought to reveal the human hands and ingenuity behind something often viewed as purely mechanical. When asked about this process, Wendy says, “Sometimes people think the mold, scan, or measurements taken of a limb are just somehow magically created into an arbitrary shape.” I hoped to capture the delicate balance between methodical precision and creative flow that is involved in this process.
“I get in a state of flow where my hands just move and create, and time ceases to exist. These moments confirm I am in exactly the right place, doing what I was designed to do,” she says of her experience. Every tool, material, and movement contributes to transforming a concept into a functional extension of the human body. This project celebrates not only the craft but the deep purpose and care embedded in every detail of creating these life-changing devices.
